Unmoved by the trappings of an archetypical spirit of a building’s basic architectural character, this stunning contemporary home in Kerala by Elemental defines its legacy reminiscing the allure of the bygone era. 

Amrutha Kishor, founder and principal architect of the firm, says that the house is designed to cater to the specific needs of the environment-conscious family of four. Inspired by the old palaces of Travancore, the roof of this house unfurls its sheer vision.

This contemporary home in Kerala speaks the minimalist design language of the traditional architecture of Kerala. The house is an epitome of grandeur concocted with fundamentals. Grand windows, exuberant staircase, and eccentric furniture engross the local impression with utmost regality. It is equipped with plush furniture under radiant spaces. Kishore majorly focussed on preserving the traditional identity of vernacular architecture. The architect wanted the house to be one of its kind amongst the buildings with an uncanny resemblance. The firm took care to retain the regional character of the city. 

Well-organized and clutter-free, the house radiates vibrance at every corner. The architects made sure to incorporate features that save up space. Apart from that, the architects majorly prioritized organizing innovative solutions to reduce the house’s carbon footprint, which is located against the sunlit landscape of Kottayam. Executing ceiling air cavity, mechanical exhaust systems in the bedrooms, implementing thermal insulation, minimizing direct sunlight, well-planned electrical systems, and a wind tower above the staircase, all these measures adopted by the firm paved the way for sustainable living. This recruited for minimum energy consumption as the house located in a tropical state does no require air-conditioning. Cross-ventilation and a higher floor to ceiling height help the home in cooling itself.

Landscaping was appointed with local species to derive easy maintenance and recharged groundwaters. The owners can grow their crops as the site incorporates a bijou orchard and a well. Solar panels are also embedded to take care of the requirement of hot water by the family. The outdoors also integrate rainwater harvesting systems and composting plants, thus drowning space into sustainable roots.

The staircase leading to the first floor of the house is extremely voguish. Constituting of a metal stringer beam, the wooden finish on the staircase derives the sense of volume, concocted with the accent brick wall accessorized with the double-height display rack.

The bedrooms are equipped with wardrobes that go up to the ceiling, following the principle for maximum storage. The house comprises four bedrooms, a master bedroom, a guest bedroom, and two daughters’ bedrooms, all of which have attached bathrooms with exuberant dressing areas.

Coming to the family lounge cum dining space, the grandeur of the space is defined by the solid wood dining table serving the inhabitants with a warm setting of togetherness. Space is further enchanted with a seating space that is ornamented with powder blue sofas setting the tone of the hall. An inbuilt audio system is also integrated into the space that makes its ideal to host parties.

Located in the proximity to the dining space, the kitchen is well–lit and ventilated. The en-suite courtyard makes sure to imbue the space with fresh air. The space-saving design features are incorporated in the kitchen space with a collapsible breakfast counter and inbuilt fridge and ovens. It is also furnished with a cabinet reaching to the heights of the ceiling to minimize clutter.

Our favorite nook of this contemporary home in Kerala remains the library where the burnt orange wing chair gathers all our consciousness. The stunning piece of furniture glows with the sultry daylight from behind. The bookshelf to its right caters to the overall look of the quite corner with finesse.
