Asia’s largest solar power plant in MP

largest solar power plant“: Adding one more feather to the hat of Rewa’s prestigious land, which is also recognized with the name of mother Narmada and the white tiger, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Asia’s largest solar power plant project in the city of Madhya Pradesh on Friday, via video conferencing.

Today, India is ranking fifth in the world for the energy economy, measured by the total revenue generated by the energy companies. The country is also among the top 3 nations in the world that are dedicated to energy investment and plans.

After the launch of India’s national solar mission in 2010, the nation has come a long way from just 10MW of solar power installed to 31,696 MW of grid-connected solar power generation capacity. As per the Ministry, the country is geared up to achieve 1,00,000 MW of solar power capacity by December 2022.

The establishment of the 750 MW solar plant project in Rewa will elevate the country’s energy economy. Apart from being the largest solar plant in Asia, the project also gained attention because it is the first to be funded by the World Bank. A part of the World Bank Group, IFC has invested 2800 crores in this project. The central government provided Rs. 138 crore for the development of this project.

At the launch of this esteemed project, PM Modi stated that Solar energy is the utmost medium to fulfill energy needs in the 21st century. He also added that this project would provide for pure and clean energy to the entire city of Rewa, and the benefits are not limited to the state of Madhya Pradesh. The project is going to account for 24 percent of energy for Delhi Metro. The Prime Minister also told about the future expansion of the solar energy plants in Madhya Pradesh as various projects are in progress in Neemuch, Shajapur, Chattarpur, and Omkareshwar.

Here are some more interesting facts regarding Asia’s largest solar plant.

  1. Asia’s largest solar park has been developed by a joint venture of Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (MPUVN) under the Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited (RUMSL).
  2. It is the largest single-site solar power plant in Asia, which is expanded in the total area of 1500 hectares.
  3. There are three solar generating units in the solar park, each located in a 500-hectare plot and generating 250 MW.
  4. ACME Jaipur Solar Power Private Limited, Mahindra Renewables Private Limited, and Arinsun Clean Energy Private Limited were chosen to develop the three generating units inside the Solar park. The selection was based on reverse auction organized by RUMSL.
  5. The project was in the news for obtaining a record low-winning bid of Rs. 2.97 per Kilowatt-hour in the year 2017 as compared to the tariff of Rs. 4.50 per unit in the current solar projects. It became the country’s first solar project to break the grid parity barrier through intelligent risk distribution.
  6. Over 15 years, Rewa solar plant manifested an escalation in the tariff by Rs. 0.05 per unit.
  7. The Rewa Solar Power Project is a massive step taken in the road to achieving the target of 175 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by the year 2022.
  8. In India’s mission to reduce its carbon footprint, this project will account for a massive reduction of around 15 lakh tons of Carbon dioxide per year.
  9. It has gained global attention by being acknowledged for its robust project structuring and innovations.
  10.  The Rewa solar power project is attributed to the then MPUVNL managing director Manu Shrivastava and former joint secretary in MNRE Tarun Kapoor. They are the faces behind developing and establishing this project plan. Tarun Kapoor is now known as India’s ‘solar man’ for this project in Rewa.
  11. The first solar plant to regulate an inter-state sale of solar power, the project will account for supplying 24 percent of the energy, i.e., 99MW to Delhi Metro. The rest 76 percent of the energy will be provided to the DISCOMs of Madhya Pradesh.
  12. This move will help the Delhi Metro to save Rs. 1,400 crore approximately in the next 25 years.
  13. The prestigious project has acquired the great World Bank Group President’s Award for its excellence and innovation.
  14. The project has also got a mention in the PM’s “A Book of Innovation: New Beginnings.”
  15. The payment security mechanism of the Rewa Solar Power Plant has been recommended by MNRE, as an ideal model to adapt to other states.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated the spirit of One World, One Sun, One Grid, this project is a remarkable contribution to unite the entire world in solar energy. The project also marked its substantial presence under the PM’s narrative of Aatmanirbhar Bharat or Self-Reliant India.
