How the line of transit affects urban design

Distance from the mode of transit and dwelling density varies linearly:

While using any mode of transit, have you ever noticed why all residences are located near the mode of transit and as the distance from the mode of transit increases, the dwelling unit’s density also increases proportionately?

This happens because transportation is one of the important key factors in everyone’s life. People tend to cluster where mode of transit is at walking distance or nearby. Water, nature, transit, are major factors around which people try to reside. People commute from work to home, for which they need public transit.

It is inevitably noticed that if any linear mode of transit, for instance any national highway is crossing through any area, the houses start developing linearly near that highway in a particular direction, which is the reason why land prices are hiked , when any major crossing road is passing through any area.

Even the plots that are near to any mode of transit are comparatively higher in price than those which are far away from line of transit.

Urban fabric and line of transit

There are various urban fabrics that describe the overall silhouette of any city. The line of transits moulds the urban design of any area. It happens because, once line of transit has been appropriately defined , then urban plaza or city plaza is defined which acts as a central spine for the development of the area.

The residential sector is kept away from industrial zone, protecting it from the pollution that is emitted from the industries.

Urban design and line of transit follows hand in hand. If the line of transit has to be shifted for a certain reason from one place to another, that affects the urban design of that particular area.

If on the other hand, there is a densely populated area which lies in the vicinity of a civic building that is used more often, the path that leads people to that building ultimately gets moulded to increase the convenience for the people.

Role of an urban designer and planner

Formulation of urban design with respect to line of transit affects the physical , social and interpersonal relationships of the people with the surrounding environment.

An urban designer, while figuring out the plan of any city must keep in mind the function of the place, he/ she should also focus on the positive and negative aspects of any amendment that the designer attempts to make.

To promote a healthy lifestyle among the residents of any place, urban designer can make changes in the master plan of that area so that walkability of residents is increased, which is sufficed by locating public transit at a distance of 15- 20 minutes from the residential sector.

Keeping in view the environmental concern also, more and more of public transit should be enhanced and promoted so that people should use maximum of public transit and minimize the use of private mode of transit.

Enhancing public mode of transit not only suffices the environmental concern, but also decreases the traffic congestion  on the  roads, which is an alarming concern in today’s time and hence paying heed to this concern at grassroot level will be beneficial for the society.
